This 3D exhibit is being hosted thanks to a grant from the Matterport Social Impact Program. Special thanks to our supporting members and to the volunteers who helped put this presentation together, from staging the museum to compiling and writing the historical information presented here. All efforts combined have made the Rengstorff House museum more accessible to the public, especially during the last trying pandemic years. The Rengstorff House is not just a museum; it’s a venue for celebrating the vibrant culture and history of San Francisco. For decades what we call Rengstorff House today lay abandoned, in total disrepair, and threatened with demolition. It took the struggle of a community group who saw beyond the shambles to recognize it as a historic resource worthy of being preserved for posterity. Friends of “R” House, also referred to as “The Friends,” is a volunteer-run non-profit incorporated in 1992 to provide continuous support to the Rengstorff House museum home. “With the 30th anniversary, many years of volunteers’ time have been given to restore Rengstorff House and teach the public about it to continue this legacy,” he said. The second story had four family bedrooms, a sewing room, and servants’ quarters, all used today for Shoreline staff offices.

What transportation and access is available?

Each half of the front of the house is a mirror reflection of the other. Matching bay windows flank the front door with identical arched windows above them. A pair of square columns supporting the front portico and two matching brick chimneys complete the balanced look of the house. The Q&A session featured restoration leaders Mark Rogge and Ginny Kaminski, Jean Walker-Wiley the organizer of the original Friends of “R” House group who advocated for saving the house, and a former resident of the landmark. Free tours of the museum level are available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 1-4 PM. After an extended closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the historical Rengstorff House is reopening to the public with limited hours and a celebration of 30 years since its restoration.

The preservation of the Rengstorff House allows visitors to marvel at the original furnishings, decor, and even personal belongings of the Rengstorff family, offering an authentic look back in time. The Friends of “R” House also has opportunities to support Rengstorff House either in public-facing or behind-the-scenes roles, including assisting with educational programs, outreach initiatives, social media and events. To commemorate the landmark year, Rengstorff House has launched “Rengstorff House Returns! ” The series of free educational tours and activities runs through September and includes tours led by house and garden restoration leaders Mark Rogge, the lead house engineer, and Barbara Gordon, a longtime lead garden consultant and rose expert.

This house belongs to the city of Mountain View, so it's not advertised the way other private places are so is a very reasonably priced venue. They have a garden area which is used for the ceremony with lots of space for guests. You have to rent the furniture and sound system on your own.The staff was friendly and accommodating. We had our Ceremony in the back garden, Cocktails were served in the front garden and the main garden was used for the Reception.

When Rengstorff died in 1906 at age 77, his daughter and her husband moved into the family home. Saved from destruction and then beautifully furnished by a community-based organization, this structure is available for public tours.
