For decades what we call Rengstorff House today lay abandoned, in total disrepair, and threatened with demolition. It took the struggle of a community group who saw beyond the shambles to recognize it as a historic resource worthy of being preserved for posterity. Friends of “R” House, also referred to as “The Friends,” is a volunteer-run non-profit incorporated in 1992 to provide continuous support to the Rengstorff House museum home. “With the 30th anniversary, many years of volunteers’ time have been given to restore Rengstorff House and teach the public about it to continue this legacy,” he said. The second story had four family bedrooms, a sewing room, and servants’ quarters, all used today for Shoreline staff offices.

What transportation and access is available?

Each half of the front of the house is a mirror reflection of the other. Matching bay windows flank the front door with identical arched windows above them. A pair of square columns supporting the front portico and two matching brick chimneys complete the balanced look of the house. The Q&A session featured restoration leaders Mark Rogge and Ginny Kaminski, Jean Walker-Wiley the organizer of the original Friends of “R” House group who advocated for saving the house, and a former resident of the landmark. Free tours of the museum level are available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 1-4 PM. After an extended closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the historical Rengstorff House is reopening to the public with limited hours and a celebration of 30 years since its restoration.

Today, the beautifully restored museum home is a prime example of adaptive reuse and provides the perfect setting for visitors to acquaint themselves with the attributes of the 19th century. Before the Rengstorff House was restored in 1990, the Friends of “R” House worked for years to ensure the future of Mountain View’s oldest house.

Mountain View Mayor Ellen Kamei, other city officials and key restoration leaders joined in showcasing the city’s oldest home and highlighting its significance in Bay Area history. This 12-room, 3,955 square foot house has 10-foot ceilings on the second story and 11-foot ceilings on the first floor. Four ornate marble fireplaces adorn the four main rooms on the first floor. These include the formal parlor (featured below), the family parlor, the music room, and the gentlemen’s parlor/office, which has the only black marble fireplace in the house. The present fireplaces are reproductions in the same style as the Rengstorff House originals. Additionally, we also own and manage the permanent collection on display on the museum level, and can purchase items, accept donations, and deaccession items for use at the house.

The group is also responsible for conducting extensive research and interpretation of Rengstorff House and its original family. It would have been kept in check, however,and even converted into an accomplishment, and one of the thousand modes ofintellectual culture, had his more ethereal characteristics retained theirvigor. But as it existed now, the effect was painful and made Phœbe droop hereyes. When Phœbe was quite dressed, she peeped out of the window, and saw a rosebushin the garden. Being a very tall one, and of luxuriant growth, it had beenpropped up against the side of the house, and was literally covered with a rareand very beautiful species of white rose.

But, even as a ray of sunshine, fall intowhat dismal place it may, instantaneously creates for itself a propriety inbeing there, so did it seem altogether fit that the girl should be standing atthe threshold. It was no less evidently proper that the door should swing opento admit her. The maiden lady herself, sternly inhospitable in her firstpurposes, soon began to feel that the door ought to be shoved back, and therusty key be turned in the reluctant lock. By the spell of contrast, another portrait rose up before her, painted withmore daring flattery than any artist would have ventured upon, but yet sodelicately touched that the likeness remained perfect. Malbone’sminiature, though from the same original, was far inferior to Hepzibah’sair-drawn picture, at which affection and sorrowful remembrance wroughttogether.

Inspiration for Hawthorne

The artist, in a desultory manner, had imparted to Phœbe something of hishistory. Young as he was, and had his career terminated at the point alreadyattained, there had been enough of incident to fill, very creditably, anautobiographic volume. A romance on the plan of Gil Blas, adapted to Americansociety and manners, would cease to be a romance. The experience of manyindividuals among us, who think it hardly worth the telling, would equal thevicissitudes of the Spaniard’s earlier life; while their ultimatesuccess, or the point whither they tend, may be incomparably higher than anythat a novelist would imagine for his hero. Thoughnow but twenty-two years old (lacking some months, which are years in such alife), he had already been, first, a country schoolmaster; next, a salesman ina country store; and, either at the same time or afterwards, the politicaleditor of a country newspaper.

Holgrave also tells Phoebe he loves her, and she admits to loving him in return. Although the neighbors become suspicious, Hepzibah and Clifford return before the body is discovered. Clifford is not suspected in the Judge’s death, and it is rumored that the Judge himself framed Clifford for the crime for which he served thirty years in prison. News arrives that the Judge’s estranged son has died in Europe, so the Judge’s inheritance goes to Clifford. Clifford, Hepzibah, Phoebe, Holgrave, and Uncle Venner all move to the Judge’s country estate, leaving the house of the seven gables to continue rotting away.

They said to themselves, perhaps, that,before his hair was gray and the crow’s-feet tracked his temples, thisnow decaying man must have stamped the impress of his features on many awoman’s heart. Thus far the Judge’s countenance had expressed mildforbearance,—grave and almost gentle deprecation of his cousin’sunbecoming violence,—free and Christian-like forgiveness of the wronginflicted by her words. But when those words were irrevocably spoken, his lookassumed sternness, the sense of power, and immitigable resolve; and this withso natural and imperceptible a change, that it seemed as if the iron man hadstood there from the first, and the meek man not at all.

On Sundays, after Phœbe had been at church,—for the girl had achurch-going conscience, and would hardly have been at ease had she missedeither prayer, singing, sermon, or benediction,—after church-time,therefore, there was, ordinarily, a sober little festival in the garden. Inaddition to Clifford, Hepzibah, and Phœbe, two guests made up the company. Onewas the artist Holgrave, who, in spite of his consociation with reformers, andhis other queer and questionable traits, continued to hold an elevated place inHepzibah’s regard. The other, we are almost ashamed to say, was thevenerable Uncle Venner, in a clean shirt, and a broadcloth coat, morerespectable than his ordinary wear, inasmuch as it was neatly patched on eachelbow, and might be called an entire garment, except for a slight inequality inthe length of its skirts.

A few blocks away on Hawthorne Boulevard towers a large statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. Jaffrey visits the house and tells Clifford that he intends to have him committed. Panicking, Jaffrey signs the document and tells Clifford that he can have the lost treasure so long as Clifford does not accuse him of murder. Of course, Phœbe was far too sensible a girl to entertain this idea in anyother way than as matter for a smile. Possibly, also, could the two personageshave stood together before her eye, many points of difference would have beenperceptible, and perhaps only a general resemblance. The long lapse ofintervening years, in a climate so unlike that which had fostered the ancestralEnglishman, must inevitably have wrought important changes in the physicalsystem of his descendant. The Judge’s volume of muscle could hardly bethe same as the Colonel’s; there was undoubtedly less beef in him. Then theJudge’s face had lost the ruddy English hue that showed its warmththrough all the duskiness of the Colonel’s weather-beaten cheek, and hadtaken a sallow shade, the established complexion of his countrymen.

And if he have time, amid the press of more urgent matters, he must takemeasures for the renewal of Mrs. Pyncheon’s tombstone, which, the sextontells him, has fallen on its marble face, and is cracked quite in twain. Shewas a praiseworthy woman enough, thinks the Judge, in spite of her nervousness,and the tears that she was so oozy with, and her foolish behavior about thecoffee; and as she took her departure so seasonably, he will not grudge thesecond tombstone. Thenext item on his list was to give orders for some fruit-trees, of a rarevariety, to be deliverable at his country-seat in the ensuing autumn. Yes, buythem, by all means; and may the peaches be luscious in your mouth, JudgePyncheon! A committee of hispolitical party has besought him for a hundred or two of dollars, in additionto his previous disbursements, towards carrying on the fall campaign. The Judgeis a patriot; the fate of the country is staked on the November election; andbesides, as will be shadowed forth in another paragraph, he has no triflingstake of his own in the same great game.

The latter might probably have been won for him, had those onwhom the guardianship of his welfare had fallen deemed it advisable to exposeClifford to a miserable resuscitation of past ideas, when the condition ofwhatever comfort he might expect lay in the calm of forgetfulness. The pitiable mockery of it,which the world might have been ready enough to offer, coming so long after theagony had done its utmost work, would have been fit only to provoke bittererlaughter than poor Clifford was ever capable of. It is a truth (and it would bea very sad one but for the higher hopes which it suggests) that no greatmistake, whether acted or endured, in our mortal sphere, is ever really setright. Time, the continual vicissitude of circumstances, and the invariableinopportunity of death, render it impossible.

All were precisely in the samecondition as before they made themselves so ridiculous by their haste to toil,to enjoy, to accumulate gold, and to become wise.

But Judge Pyncheon was not the man to let himself be startled from aneasy-chair with haste ill-befitting either the dignity of his character or hisbroad personal basis, by the alarm of an hysteric woman. It did not yield to her hand; and the whitecurtain, drawn across the window which formed the upper section of the door,struck her quick perceptive faculty as something unusual.

So Alice put woman’smight against man’s might; a match not often equal on the part of woman. There were two objects that appeared rather out of place in this veryhandsomely furnished room. One was a large map, or surveyor’s plan, of atract of land, which looked as if it had been drawn a good many years ago, andwas now dingy with smoke, and soiled, here and there, with the touch offingers. The other was a portrait of a stern old man, in a Puritan garb,painted roughly, but with a bold effect, and a remarkably strong expression ofcharacter.

There is one other feature, very essential to be noticed, but which, we greatlyfear, may damage any picturesque and romantic impression which we have beenwilling to throw over our sketch of this respectable edifice. In the frontgable, under the impending brow of the second story, and contiguous to thestreet, was a shop-door, divided horizontally in the midst, and with a windowfor its upper segment, such as is often seen in dwellings of a somewhat ancientdate. The streetin which it upreared its venerable peaks has long ceased to be a fashionablequarter of the town; so that, though the old edifice was surrounded byhabitations of modern date, they were mostly small, built entirely of wood, andtypical of the most plodding uniformity of common life. Doubtless, however, thewhole story of human existence may be latent in each of them, but with nopicturesqueness, externally, that can attract the imagination or sympathy toseek it there. But as for the old structure of our story, its white-oak frame,and its boards, shingles, and crumbling plaster, and even the huge, clusteredchimney in the midst, seemed to constitute only the least and meanest part ofits reality. So much of mankind’s varied experience had passedthere,—so much had been suffered, and something, too, enjoyed,—thatthe very timbers were oozy, as with the moisture of a heart.

Hepzibah spread out her gaunt figure across the door, and seemed really toincrease in bulk; looking the more terrible, also, because there was so muchterror and agitation in her heart. But Judge Pyncheon’s evident purposeof forcing a passage was interrupted by a voice from the inner room; a weak,tremulous, wailing voice, indicating helpless alarm, with no more energy forself-defence than belongs to a frightened infant. She retired to her chamber, but did not soon fall asleep, nor then veryprofoundly. At some uncertain period in the depths of night, and, as it were,through the thin veil of a dream, she was conscious of a footstep mounting thestairs heavily, but not with force and decision. The voice of Hepzibah, with ahush through it, was going up along with the footsteps; and, again, responsiveto her cousin’s voice, Phœbe heard that strange, vague murmur, whichmight be likened to an indistinct shadow of human utterance.

Also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, Seven Gables is located right on the water of Salem Harbor at the intersection of Derby and Turner Streets. The large house was built in 1668 and is uniquely constructed with many pointed gables, multiple chimneys, and a dark, foreboding exterior. When opened, the back leads to a secret staircase which leads up to the attic. After John Turner III lost the family fortune, the house was acquired by the Ingersolls, who remodeled it again. In the first half of the 18th century, John Turner II remodeled the house in the new Georgian style, adding wood paneling and sash windows. These alterations are preserved, very early examples of Georgian decor.

Possibly, the Judge was aware how little true hardihood lay behindHepzibah’s formidable front. It may have been his purpose, indeed, to melt poorHepzibah on the spot, as if she were a figure of yellow wax. Then, all at once, it struck Phœbe that this very Judge Pyncheon was theoriginal of the miniature which the daguerreotypist had shown her in thegarden, and that the hard, stern, relentless look, now on his face, was thesame that the sun had so inflexibly persisted in bringing out.

Clifford, on several occasions, had seemed to enjoythe old man’s intercourse, for the sake of his mellow, cheerful vein,which was like the sweet flavor of a frost-bitten apple, such as one picks upunder the tree in December. A man at the very lowest point of the social scalewas easier and more agreeable for the fallen gentleman to encounter than aperson at any of the intermediate degrees; and, moreover, as Clifford’syoung manhood had been lost, he was fond of feeling himself comparativelyyouthful, now, in apposition with the patriarchal age of Uncle Venner. The second of Chanticleer’s two wives, ever since Phœbe’s arrival,had been in a state of heavy despondency, caused, as it afterwards appeared, byher inability to lay an egg. Shortlyafter, there was a prodigious cackling and gratulation of Chanticleer and allhis family, including the wizened chicken, who appeared to understand thematter quite as well as did his sire, his mother, or his aunt. That afternoonPhœbe found a diminutive egg,—not in the regular nest, it was far tooprecious to be trusted there,—but cunningly hidden under thecurrant-bushes, on some dry stalks of last year’s grass. Hepzibah, onlearning the fact, took possession of the egg and appropriated it toClifford’s breakfast, on account of a certain delicacy of flavor, forwhich, as she affirmed, these eggs had always been famous.

But there was something pitifully small inthis old Pyncheon’s mode of setting about his commercial operations; itwas whispered, that, with his own hands, all beruffled as they were, he used togive change for a shilling, and would turn a half-penny twice over, to makesure that it was a good one. Beyond all question, he had the blood of a pettyhuckster in his veins, through whatever channel it may have found its waythere. The aspect of the venerable mansion has always affected me like a humancountenance, bearing the traces not merely of outward storm and sunshine, butexpressive also, of the long lapse of mortal life, and accompanyingvicissitudes that have passed within.
