Basic Mixed Methods Research Designs

mixed design

The results might differ; the survey may find that rap is the most popular genre, whereas the focus groups may suggest rock music is more widely listened to. Through this method's flexibility, researchers can gain multiple perspectives and uncover differing or even conflicting results when integrating data. An example of this would be if you surveyed employees at a company about their satisfaction with their job and then conducted interviews to gain more information about why they responded the way they did. For instance, you may survey students about their opinions of an online learning platform and conduct individual interviews to gain further insight into their responses. There are several reasons why mixed methods research can be beneficial, including generalizability, contextualization, and credibility. This pooled error is used when testing the effect of the between-subject variable within a level of the within-subject variable.

Trending Analysis

Besides the three basic mixed method designs—exploratory sequential, explanatory sequential, and convergent parallel—you can use one of the four advanced frameworks to extend mixed methods research designs. The exploratory sequential design collects qualitative data first, followed by quantitative data. This type of mixed methods research is used when the goal is to explore a topic before collecting any quantitative data.

Explanatory sequential design

Related to this idea is whether one will conduct a qualitatively driven, a quantitatively driven, or an equal-status mixed methods study. This language is sometimes included in the design name to communicate this characteristic of the study design (e. g., a “quantitatively driven sequential mixed methods design”). The purpose of this article is to help researchers to understand how to design a mixed methods research study. Perhaps the simplest approach is to design is to look at a single book and select one from the few designs included in that book.

Interventions: miracle friends and miracle money

This text is intended for use in Intermediate/Advanced Research Methods, Mixed Methods, Research Design, and Social Research Methods courses across the social and behavioral sciences. By following a thread, the researcher can explore various research topics related to the original issue and gain a more comprehensive view of the issue. This integration method combines different methods with differing or conflicting results to generate one unified answer.

Inclusion of a purpose in the design name can sometimes provide readers with useful information about the study design, as in, e. Simultaneity indicates whether data collection is done concurrent or sequentially. Dependence indicates whether the implementation of one component depends upon the results of data analysis of the other component.

Of the 191 study participants in the Miracle Money group who were initially matched to a volunteer phone buddy, 103 were verified as participating in Miracle Friends and began receiving monthly income and 70 people were not selected because they were not participating in Miracle Friends. One person withdrew from the study and we were unable to contact 17 others in the Miracle Money group who had been initially matched with a Miracle Friend. To reach a target goal of 105 participants receiving basic income through Miracle Money, recruitment efforts have yielded more than 200 individuals in each treatment group.

Quantitative phase (validity assessment)

Qualitative data involves non-numerical measures like beliefs, motivations, attitudes, and experiences, often derived through interviews and focus group research to gain a deeper understanding of a research question or phenomenon. In these designs, mixing occurs in an interactive manner at all stages of the study. At each stage, one approach affects the formulation of the other, and multiple types of implementation processes can occur. Meta Horizon OS is the result of a decade of work at Meta to build a next-generation computing platform. To pioneer standalone headsets, we developed technologies like inside-out-tracking and self-tracked controllers. To allow for more natural interaction systems and social presence, we pioneered hand, eye, face and body tracking.

At the same time, interviewees often have shared greater depth or alternative descriptions that will “earn their way” into the analyses and interpretation [56]. In the final stage of analysis, broader interpretation will be sought to identify recurrent themes agreed on by consensus and recorded as memos. Once enrolled, the single study administrator provided the Miracle Messages staff with the group assignment of each participant to determine whether Miracle Friends should be offered. For those assigned to Miracle Money, the possibility of receiving guaranteed income was only disclosed after it had been determined that they were participating in the Miracle Friends intervention. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) suffer from extreme health disparities including high rates of disease (e.g., obesity, cancer, and depression) [1,2,3,4,5,6,7], early onset of geriatric conditions, and decades-early mortality [8,9,10,11,12,13,14].

At the same time, interviews or focus groups can provide qualitative data on students' experiences and opinions. Much more important, however, than a design name is for the author to provide an accurate description of what was done in the research study, so the reader will know exactly how the study was conducted. The area around the center of the [qualitative-quantitative] continuum, equal status, is the home for the person that self-identifies as a mixed methods researcher. This researcher takes as his or her starting point the logic and philosophy of mixed methods research. These mixed methods researchers are likely to believe that qualitative and quantitative data and approaches will add insights as one considers most, if not all, research questions.

By collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data in the same study, you can draw more meaningful conclusions. Mixed methods research is a popular method for researching today, allowing for a deeper exploration of a research question by utilizing a blend of qualitative and quantitative data. When following up interactions for terms that are both between-subjects or both within-subjects variables, the method is identical to follow-up tests in ANOVA. The MSError term that applies to the follow-up in question is the appropriate one to use, e.g. if following up a significant interaction of two between-subject effects, use the MSError term from between-subjects.[5][page needed] See ANOVA.

The Gate of Higher Knowing, also found in the G-Center, symbolizes the ability to connect to and receive guidance from one’s higher self, leading to a sense of direction in life. This gate bestows an intuitive sense of purpose, allowing individuals to trust their inner guidance and make decisions aligned with their true path. Human Design is based on the idea that we are each imprinted with the energy of the location, and birth date and birth time. The Gate of Growth, located in the Sacral Center, symbolizes the capacity to embrace change and evolve, using life’s experiences as opportunities for personal development.

Gate 46 – Determination of the Self / Physicality

The Gate of Inner Truth, found in the Head Center, represents the ability to access and understand one’s inner truth and wisdom, using this knowledge to guide personal decisions and actions. Individuals with this gate activated possess a strong sense of self-awareness and introspection, often seeking deeper understanding and meaning in life’s experiences. The Gate of Crisis, located in the Solar Plexus Center, symbolizes the capacity to navigate emotional crises and use them as opportunities for growth and transformation.

Conscious Gates

Naturally, this opens many more questions than it answers(!) so let’s quickly go over hexagrams and I-Ching before moving on to a more detailed look at gates themselves. Coming back from these wrong paths takes a true breakdown of what is already made, and starting fresh. They went too far and for too long in directions that didn’t fulfill them, and experienced a slow death of their soul. Human Design Gate 57 The Gentle - The Gate of Intuitive Insight

Each Human Design gate also has 6 lines, which adds further nuance in terms of activated gates. The end result is a synthesis of a natal chart or astrological birth chart, showing a diagram of the energy centers as the focal point, with the hexagrams around the outside. This maximum comes from the 13 celestial bodies (known as planets) in our conscious personality and unconscious design profile lines shown on each side of your unique chart (more on this later).

Begin to notice all of the good fortune that you’ve called into your life. You never need worry about financial insecurity. The shadow of Gate 14, according to Gene Keys, is compromise.Richard Rudd (Gene Keys) explains that this compromise is most dangerous when we compromise ourselves. Gate/Gene Key 14 invites us to believe fully in ourselves and our abilities so that we can experience the bounteousness that is promised here, in its highest expression. Most often the potential of this gate will be distorted by your mind. You tend with gate14 to throw money out the window or throw money at problems and hope that they will go away. You carry within you the inner knowledge of using resources to expand our consciousness and our horizons.

For those with Gate 14, their journey of personal development may be characterized by their strong drive and determination. They are likely to be motivated to grow and improve, often setting ambitious goals for themselves. Moreover, people with Gate 14 can sometimes come across as domineering or controlling in their relationships, especially if they are not conscious of their powerful energy. Maintaining awareness and ensuring their power is used in a supportive and empowering way can help mitigate this potential issue. People with this gate active in their design often bring a strong drive and determination to their relationships.

For me, personally, one of my biggest shadows with gate 14 (and the sacral as a whole) was around being seen as lazy. What I’m saying though, is that our inner relationship with money doesn’t change just because we have more money. Changing the way we think, feel, and behave with money is a matter of deconditioning. But, bare with me here because I’m not talking about the outer realities of money. Having more money absolutely does make our circumstances easier to navigate. All that said, my experience with amplifying gate 14 energy is that, more often than not, we are on the “low” end of the spectrum.

Rengstorff House in MV, celebrating 30 years since restoration, reopens soon

Rengstorff House is a relic of the City of Mountain View’s farming and maritime heritage. It is the City of Mountain View’s oldest standing house and one of the finest examples of Victorian Italianate architecture on the West Coast. Today, the beautifully restored museum home is a prime example of adaptive reuse and provides the perfect setting for visitors to acquaint themselves with the attributes of the 19th century. Before the Rengstorff House was restored in 1990, the Friends of “R” House worked for years to ensure the future of Mountain View’s oldest house.

The Friends of "R" House

Mountain View Mayor Ellen Kamei, other city officials and key restoration leaders joined in showcasing the city’s oldest home and highlighting its significance in Bay Area history. This 12-room, 3,955 square foot house has 10-foot ceilings on the second story and 11-foot ceilings on the first floor. Four ornate marble fireplaces adorn the four main rooms on the first floor. These include the formal parlor (featured below), the family parlor, the music room, and the gentlemen’s parlor/office, which has the only black marble fireplace in the house. The present fireplaces are reproductions in the same style as the Rengstorff House originals. Additionally, we also own and manage the permanent collection on display on the museum level, and can purchase items, accept donations, and deaccession items for use at the house.

The group is also responsible for conducting extensive research and interpretation of Rengstorff House and its original family. In October, the museum is scheduled to reopen with docent-led tours 1-4 p.m. To watch the virtual anniversary celebration, visit the city’s YouTube channel at YouTube.com/MountainViewGov. The city’s government channel, Mountain View City Television on Comcast cable channel 26, will cablecast the virtual event 10 a.m. Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View – is one of the finest examples of the romantic Victorian Italianate style architecture on the West Coast.

American Historic Homes Salem MA Museum Turner-Ingersoll Mansion

house of seven gables

Then his face darkened, as if the shadow of a cavern or a dungeon had come overit; there was no more light in its expression than might have come through theiron grates of a prison-window—still lessening, too, as if he weresinking farther into the depths. Phœbe (being of that quickness and activityof temperament that she seldom long refrained from taking a part, and generallya good one, in what was going forward) now felt herself moved to address thestranger. Mingled in his countenance with a dreamydelight, there was a troubled look of effort and unrest. He was seeking to makehimself more fully sensible of the scene around him; or, perhaps, dreading itto be a dream, or a play of imagination, was vexing the fair moment with astruggle for some added brilliancy and more durable illusion. The two relatives—the young maid and the old one—found time beforenightfall, in the intervals of trade, to make rapid advances towards affectionand confidence. A recluse, like Hepzibah, usually displays remarkablefrankness, and at least temporary affability, on being absolutely cornered, andbrought to the point of personal intercourse; like the angel whom Jacobwrestled with, she is ready to bless you when once overcome.

Episode 73: The House of the Seven Gables, by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

At such a crisis, there is no death; forimmortality is revealed anew, and embraces everything in its hallowedatmosphere. The girl knew that her two relatives were capable of far greater oddities thanthat of shutting themselves up in their old house, as they appeared now to havedone. Nevertheless, with indistinct misgivings of something amiss, andapprehensions to which she could not give shape, she approached the door thatformed the customary communication between the house and garden. She knocked, however; andimmediately, as if the application had been expected, the door was drawn open,by a considerable exertion of some unseen person’s strength, not wide, but far enough to afford her a sidelong entrance.

And then, while the yellow richness of the declining sunshine still fell intothe open space of the garden, Phœbe brought out a loaf of bread and a chinabowl of currants, freshly gathered from the bushes, and crushed with sugar. These, with water,—but not from the fountain of ill omen, close athand,—constituted all the entertainment. Meanwhile, Holgrave took somepains to establish an intercourse with Clifford, actuated, it might seem, entirely by an impulse of kindliness, in order that the present hour might becheerfuller than most which the poor recluse had spent, or was destined yet tospend. Nevertheless, in the artist’s deep, thoughtful, all-observanteyes, there was, now and then, an expression, not sinister, but questionable;as if he had some other interest in the scene than a stranger, a youthful andunconnected adventurer, might be supposed to have. With great mobility ofoutward mood, however, he applied himself to the task of enlivening the party;and with so much success, that even dark-hued Hepzibah threw off one tint ofmelancholy, and made what shift she could with the remaining portion.

injured in crash that left vehicle nearly split in half in Sylmar

It would have been kept in check, however, and even converted into an accomplishment, and one of the thousand modes ofintellectual culture, had his more ethereal characteristics retained theirvigor. But as it existed now, the effect was painful and made Phœbe droop hereyes. When Phœbe was quite dressed, she peeped out of the window, and saw a rosebushin the garden. Being a very tall one, and of luxuriant growth, it had beenpropped up against the side of the house, and was literally covered with a rareand very beautiful species of white rose.

house of seven gables

But, even as a ray of sunshine, fall intowhat dismal place it may, instantaneously creates for itself a propriety inbeing there, so did it seem altogether fit that the girl should be standing atthe threshold. It was no less evidently proper that the door should swing opento admit her. The maiden lady herself, sternly inhospitable in her firstpurposes, soon began to feel that the door ought to be shoved back, and therusty key be turned in the reluctant lock. By the spell of contrast, another portrait rose up before her, painted withmore daring flattery than any artist would have ventured upon, but yet sodelicately touched that the likeness remained perfect. Malbone’sminiature, though from the same original, was far inferior to Hepzibah’sair-drawn picture, at which affection and sorrowful remembrance wroughttogether.

Inspiration for Hawthorne

The artist, in a desultory manner, had imparted to Phœbe something of hishistory. Young as he was, and had his career terminated at the point alreadyattained, there had been enough of incident to fill, very creditably, anautobiographic volume. A romance on the plan of Gil Blas, adapted to Americansociety and manners, would cease to be a romance. The experience of manyindividuals among us, who think it hardly worth the telling, would equal thevicissitudes of the Spaniard’s earlier life; while their ultimatesuccess, or the point whither they tend, may be incomparably higher than anythat a novelist would imagine for his hero. Thoughnow but twenty-two years old (lacking some months, which are years in such alife), he had already been, first, a country schoolmaster; next, a salesman ina country store; and, either at the same time or afterwards, the politicaleditor of a country newspaper.

Holgrave also tells Phoebe he loves her, and she admits to loving him in return. Although the neighbors become suspicious, Hepzibah and Clifford return before the body is discovered. Clifford is not suspected in the Judge’s death, and it is rumored that the Judge himself framed Clifford for the crime for which he served thirty years in prison. News arrives that the Judge’s estranged son has died in Europe, so the Judge’s inheritance goes to Clifford. Clifford, Hepzibah, Phoebe, Holgrave, and Uncle Venner all move to the Judge’s country estate, leaving the house of the seven gables to continue rotting away.

They said to themselves, perhaps, that, before his hair was gray and the crow’s-feet tracked his temples, thisnow decaying man must have stamped the impress of his features on many awoman’s heart. Thus far the Judge’s countenance had expressed mildforbearance,—grave and almost gentle deprecation of his cousin’sunbecoming violence,—free and Christian-like forgiveness of the wronginflicted by her words. But when those words were irrevocably spoken, his lookassumed sternness, the sense of power, and immitigable resolve; and this withso natural and imperceptible a change, that it seemed as if the iron man hadstood there from the first, and the meek man not at all.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures: 10 Things You Can't Miss

On Sundays, after Phœbe had been at church,—for the girl had achurch-going conscience, and would hardly have been at ease had she missedeither prayer, singing, sermon, or benediction,—after church-time,therefore, there was, ordinarily, a sober little festival in the garden. Inaddition to Clifford, Hepzibah, and Phœbe, two guests made up the company. Onewas the artist Holgrave, who, in spite of his consociation with reformers, andhis other queer and questionable traits, continued to hold an elevated place inHepzibah’s regard. The other, we are almost ashamed to say, was thevenerable Uncle Venner, in a clean shirt, and a broadcloth coat, morerespectable than his ordinary wear, inasmuch as it was neatly patched on eachelbow, and might be called an entire garment, except for a slight inequality inthe length of its skirts.

A few blocks away on Hawthorne Boulevard towers a large statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. Jaffrey visits the house and tells Clifford that he intends to have him committed. Clifford responds by asking Jaffrey to sign a document that clears Clifford's name. Deacon Arnold Foster (Miles Mander), who loaned Jaffrey the investment funds, arrives and demands the money back. Panicking, Jaffrey signs the document and tells Clifford that he can have the lost treasure so long as Clifford does not accuse him of murder. It's all been a trick on Jaffrey, played by Clifford and Matthew Maule.

Of course, Phœbe was far too sensible a girl to entertain this idea in anyother way than as matter for a smile. Possibly, also, could the two personageshave stood together before her eye, many points of difference would have beenperceptible, and perhaps only a general resemblance. The long lapse ofintervening years, in a climate so unlike that which had fostered the ancestralEnglishman, must inevitably have wrought important changes in the physicalsystem of his descendant. The Judge’s volume of muscle could hardly bethe same as the Colonel’s; there was undoubtedly less beef in him. Then theJudge’s face had lost the ruddy English hue that showed its warmththrough all the duskiness of the Colonel’s weather-beaten cheek, and hadtaken a sallow shade, the established complexion of his countrymen.

And if he have time, amid the press of more urgent matters, he must takemeasures for the renewal of Mrs. Pyncheon’s tombstone, which, the sextontells him, has fallen on its marble face, and is cracked quite in twain. Shewas a praiseworthy woman enough, thinks the Judge, in spite of her nervousness, and the tears that she was so oozy with, and her foolish behavior about thecoffee; and as she took her departure so seasonably, he will not grudge thesecond tombstone. Thenext item on his list was to give orders for some fruit-trees, of a rarevariety, to be deliverable at his country-seat in the ensuing autumn. Yes, buythem, by all means; and may the peaches be luscious in your mouth, JudgePyncheon! A committee of hispolitical party has besought him for a hundred or two of dollars, in additionto his previous disbursements, towards carrying on the fall campaign. The Judgeis a patriot; the fate of the country is staked on the November election; andbesides, as will be shadowed forth in another paragraph, he has no triflingstake of his own in the same great game.

The latter might probably have been won for him, had those onwhom the guardianship of his welfare had fallen deemed it advisable to exposeClifford to a miserable resuscitation of past ideas, when the condition ofwhatever comfort he might expect lay in the calm of forgetfulness. The pitiable mockery of it,which the world might have been ready enough to offer, coming so long after theagony had done its utmost work, would have been fit only to provoke bittererlaughter than poor Clifford was ever capable of. It is a truth (and it would bea very sad one but for the higher hopes which it suggests) that no greatmistake, whether acted or endured, in our mortal sphere, is ever really setright. Time, the continual vicissitude of circumstances, and the invariableinopportunity of death, render it impossible.

Support our mission to be a welcoming, thriving, historic site and community resource that engages people of all backgrounds in our inclusive American story. Horace Ingersoll, Susanna's adopted son, told Hawthorne a story of Acadian lovers that later inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline. A few years later, a kitchen lean-to and a new north kitchen ell to the rear of the house were added. By 1676, Turner had added a spacious south (front) extension with its own chimney, containing a parlor on the ground floor, with a large bed chamber above it. Ceilings in this new wing are higher than the very low ceilings in older parts of the house. The new wing featured double casement windows and an overhang with carved pendants; it was capped with a three-gabled garret.

For here,—and if we fail to impress it suitablyupon the reader, it is our own fault, not that of the theme, here is one of thetruest points of melancholy interest that occur in ordinary life. A lady—who had fedherself from childhood with the shadowy food of aristocratic reminiscences, andwhose religion it was that a lady’s hand soils itself irremediably bydoing aught for bread,—this born lady, after sixty years of narrowingmeans, is fain to step down from her pedestal of imaginary rank. Poverty, treading closely at her heels for a lifetime, has come up with her at last.

For the most remarkable aspect of the affair was, that, at thecessation of the music, everybody was petrified at once, from the mostextravagant life into a dead torpor. Neither was the cobbler’s shoefinished, nor the blacksmith’s iron shaped out; nor was there a drop lessof brandy in the toper’s bottle, nor a drop more of milk in themilkmaid’s pail, nor one additional coin in the miser’s strong-box,nor was the scholar a page deeper in his book. All were precisely in the samecondition as before they made themselves so ridiculous by their haste to toil,to enjoy, to accumulate gold, and to become wise.

The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne Plot Summary

house of seven gables

But Judge Pyncheon was not the man to let himself be startled from aneasy-chair with haste ill-befitting either the dignity of his character or hisbroad personal basis, by the alarm of an hysteric woman. Yet, considering hisown interest in the matter, he might have bestirred himself with a little morealacrity. So sweetly cool was the atmosphere, after all the feverish day, that the summereve might be fancied as sprinkling dews and liquid moonlight, with a dash oficy temper in them, out of a silver vase. Here and there, a few drops of thisfreshness were scattered on a human heart, and gave it youth again, andsympathy with the eternal youth of nature. It made him feel—what he sometimes almostforgot, thrust so early as he had been into the rude struggle of man withman—how youthful he still was. With his mind full of imaginary magnificence, Mr. Pyncheon heard a half-utteredexclamation from his daughter.

Brief Biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne

With these reflections, the old man was shutting the gate of the littleback-yard. Creaking on its hinges, however, like every other gate and doorabout the premises, the sound reached the ears of the occupant of the northerngable, one of the windows of which had a side-view towards the gate. Uncle Venner, trundling a wheelbarrow, was the earliest person stirring in theneighborhood the day after the storm. The family-party of the defunct Pyncheons,we presume, goes off in this wise.

injured in crash that left vehicle nearly split in half in Sylmar

This sadaffair had chanced about thirty years before the action of our story commences.Latterly, there were rumors (which few believed, and only one or two feltgreatly interested in) that this long-buried man was likely, for some reason orother, to be summoned forth from his living tomb. A plain, but handsome, dark-green barouche had now drawn up in front of theruinous portal of the old mansion-house. The party came forth, and (with theexception of good Uncle Venner, who was to follow in a few days) proceeded totake their places. They were chatting and laughing very pleasantly together;and—as proves to be often the case, at moments when we ought to palpitatewith sensibility—Clifford and Hepzibah bade a final farewell to the abodeof their forefathers, with hardly more emotion than if they had made it theirarrangement to return thither at tea-time. Whencesoever originating, there now arose a theory that undertook so to accountfor these circumstances as to exclude the idea of Clifford’s agency.

The sound of footsteps was not harsh, bold, decided, and intrusive, as the gait of strangers would naturally be, makingauthoritative entrance into a dwelling where they knew themselves unwelcome. Itwas feeble, as of persons either weak or weary; there was the mingled murmur oftwo voices, familiar to both the listeners. It did not yield to her hand; and the whitecurtain, drawn across the window which formed the upper section of the door, struck her quick perceptive faculty as something unusual.

So Alice put woman’smight against man’s might; a match not often equal on the part of woman. There were two objects that appeared rather out of place in this veryhandsomely furnished room. One was a large map, or surveyor’s plan, of atract of land, which looked as if it had been drawn a good many years ago, andwas now dingy with smoke, and soiled, here and there, with the touch offingers. The other was a portrait of a stern old man, in a Puritan garb, painted roughly, but with a bold effect, and a remarkably strong expression ofcharacter.

There is one other feature, very essential to be noticed, but which, we greatlyfear, may damage any picturesque and romantic impression which we have beenwilling to throw over our sketch of this respectable edifice. In the frontgable, under the impending brow of the second story, and contiguous to thestreet, was a shop-door, divided horizontally in the midst, and with a windowfor its upper segment, such as is often seen in dwellings of a somewhat ancientdate. This same shop-door had been a subject of no slight mortification to thepresent occupant of the august Pyncheon House, as well as to some of herpredecessors.

In 2022 when she was still a member of Congress and running for mayor, two men broke into her Baldwin Vista home and stole a pair of handguns.

Clifford and Phœbe

The streetin which it upreared its venerable peaks has long ceased to be a fashionablequarter of the town; so that, though the old edifice was surrounded byhabitations of modern date, they were mostly small, built entirely of wood, andtypical of the most plodding uniformity of common life. Doubtless, however, thewhole story of human existence may be latent in each of them, but with nopicturesqueness, externally, that can attract the imagination or sympathy toseek it there. But as for the old structure of our story, its white-oak frame, and its boards, shingles, and crumbling plaster, and even the huge, clusteredchimney in the midst, seemed to constitute only the least and meanest part ofits reality. So much of mankind’s varied experience had passedthere,—so much had been suffered, and something, too, enjoyed,—thatthe very timbers were oozy, as with the moisture of a heart.

Hepzibah spread out her gaunt figure across the door, and seemed really toincrease in bulk; looking the more terrible, also, because there was so muchterror and agitation in her heart. But Judge Pyncheon’s evident purposeof forcing a passage was interrupted by a voice from the inner room; a weak, tremulous, wailing voice, indicating helpless alarm, with no more energy forself-defence than belongs to a frightened infant. She retired to her chamber, but did not soon fall asleep, nor then veryprofoundly. At some uncertain period in the depths of night, and, as it were, through the thin veil of a dream, she was conscious of a footstep mounting thestairs heavily, but not with force and decision. The voice of Hepzibah, with ahush through it, was going up along with the footsteps; and, again, responsiveto her cousin’s voice, Phœbe heard that strange, vague murmur, whichmight be likened to an indistinct shadow of human utterance.

Also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, Seven Gables is located right on the water of Salem Harbor at the intersection of Derby and Turner Streets. The large house was built in 1668 and is uniquely constructed with many pointed gables, multiple chimneys, and a dark, foreboding exterior. When opened, the back leads to a secret staircase which leads up to the attic. After John Turner III lost the family fortune, the house was acquired by the Ingersolls, who remodeled it again. In the first half of the 18th century, John Turner II remodeled the house in the new Georgian style, adding wood paneling and sash windows. These alterations are preserved, very early examples of Georgian decor.

Possibly, the Judge was aware how little true hardihood lay behindHepzibah’s formidable front. It may have been his purpose, indeed, to melt poorHepzibah on the spot, as if she were a figure of yellow wax. Then, all at once, it struck Phœbe that this very Judge Pyncheon was theoriginal of the miniature which the daguerreotypist had shown her in thegarden, and that the hard, stern, relentless look, now on his face, was thesame that the sun had so inflexibly persisted in bringing out.

Clifford, on several occasions, had seemed to enjoythe old man’s intercourse, for the sake of his mellow, cheerful vein, which was like the sweet flavor of a frost-bitten apple, such as one picks upunder the tree in December. A man at the very lowest point of the social scalewas easier and more agreeable for the fallen gentleman to encounter than aperson at any of the intermediate degrees; and, moreover, as Clifford’syoung manhood had been lost, he was fond of feeling himself comparativelyyouthful, now, in apposition with the patriarchal age of Uncle Venner. The second of Chanticleer’s two wives, ever since Phœbe’s arrival, had been in a state of heavy despondency, caused, as it afterwards appeared, byher inability to lay an egg. Shortlyafter, there was a prodigious cackling and gratulation of Chanticleer and allhis family, including the wizened chicken, who appeared to understand thematter quite as well as did his sire, his mother, or his aunt. That afternoonPhœbe found a diminutive egg,—not in the regular nest, it was far tooprecious to be trusted there,—but cunningly hidden under thecurrant-bushes, on some dry stalks of last year’s grass. Hepzibah, onlearning the fact, took possession of the egg and appropriated it toClifford’s breakfast, on account of a certain delicacy of flavor, forwhich, as she affirmed, these eggs had always been famous.

But there was something pitifully small inthis old Pyncheon’s mode of setting about his commercial operations; itwas whispered, that, with his own hands, all beruffled as they were, he used togive change for a shilling, and would turn a half-penny twice over, to makesure that it was a good one. Beyond all question, he had the blood of a pettyhuckster in his veins, through whatever channel it may have found its waythere. The aspect of the venerable mansion has always affected me like a humancountenance, bearing the traces not merely of outward storm and sunshine, butexpressive also, of the long lapse of mortal life, and accompanyingvicissitudes that have passed within.
